Who We are
The Hokianga Community Educational Trust (HCET) is an organisation founded in 2003 for the purpose of supporting and enhancing educational opportunities for the people of Hokianga.
Over the years this has taken many forms, from supporting individuals and groups with advocacy and occasionally funds to running film and book festivals. From the latter has arisen Hokianga Publishers, which now has 10 books in its catalogue.
A fundamental interest is helping activate the local former polytechnic Campus at Rawene, now leased and managed by Te Puna o Kupenuku, a community group set up specifically to enhance community outcomes.
HCET actively supports the new development by employing two people (Akō) to promote Arts and IT on the campus. HCET also provides an umbrella for funds for new and unincorporated groups.

A Powerful Hokianga Story Comes Home to Rawene
A remarkable chapter of Hokianga history will come to life at Rawene Town Hall on 13 November. Written by Ngāpuhi playwright Geoffrey Clendon, Tāke Kurī: The Dog Tax Rebellion revisits the events of 1898, when opposition to an unjust Dog Tax escalated into a confrontation between Te Māhurehure hapū and government forces.
Blending drama, humour and history, four actors transform into more than 20 characters—including some wonderfully wry canine commentators. Audiences will also have the opportunity to view rarely seen archival photographs connecting the production with the real people and events behind the story.
Powerful, thought-provoking and unmistakably local, Tāke Kurī explores resistance, mana and what can happen when communities feel their voices are not being heard.
